Artist Ruth Smiths’ design philosophy is inspired by the wildlife of Great Britain, a love of drawing and mark-making combined with a modern aesthetic of clean lines with the delicate layering of translucent watercolours makes her style ephemeral, catching a transient and fleeting moment.

Ruth studied at Edinburgh College of Art and inspired by the natural world, returned to her studies to qualify as a Landscape Architect. The profession is the holistic process of shaping the natural and built environment to create desirable places for people to live, work and play and environments for plants and animals to thrive.

With this background Ruth worked in practice but it is the draw of the transient landscape which Ruth explores in her art.

Ruth works from her studio in Bollington on the edge of the beautiful Derbyshire Peak District in England
